Monarch Hero Curriculum Training

Apply now to be one of 40 Oklahomans certified to train other fellow Okies on the National Wildlife Federation’s Monarch Heroes Curriculum.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is funding and hosting this event on July 9-10, 2018. Forty lucky Okies will be selected to participate in this training with the expectation they will host at least two trainings themselves.

While the training is hosted in OKC, we aim to recruit participation statewide. Any Okie willing to train others is considered a qualified candidate.

There is no registration fee and free lunch will be provided both days. However, participants must purchase their own copy of the Monarch Heroes curriculum. Cost is based on the number of participants, but is expected to be $40-$50.

About the Workshop

The National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Monarch Heroes Train the Trainer workshop is a 2-day workshop that will equip volunteers, informal educators and teachers with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to conduct a Monarch Heroes Workshop for educators. The first day of the workshop will be spent modeling how to conduct a workshop. We will familiarize participants with the Monarch Heroes Program and how it fits into NWF’s educational framework including both Schoolyard Habitats® and Eco-Schools USA. We will teach the basics of monarch biology and conservation and the status of the monarch butterfly so that participants will gain the necessary background information to begin to engage their students in monarch recovery. We will introduce participants to NWF’s Monarch Mission curriculum and will model lessons that will engage students in their monarch gardens. During the second day, workshop participants will learn how to involve their students in the design, implementation, maintenance and monitoring of a monarch garden. Overall, participants will l learn how to structure a good workshop, what the best resources are, how to recruit teachers, selecting the right partners, and National Wildlife Federation’s best practices including alignment to the standards, project based learning and Green STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
